Call for Papers
The Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini of Lucca is pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the symposium «When Jazz meets Cinema», to be held in Lovere (BG), Auditorium di Villa Milesi, from Friday 5 until Sunday 7 May 2017.
Cinema is the form of entertainment that can be, above all, identified with the XX century. It gradually replaced theatre as the popular form of performed storytelling, and replaced opera too as the new “multimedia” art form, soon incorporating music as one of cinema’s privileged means to tell stories. Speaking of music, it is jazz that can be considered the most original musical expression emerged in the XX century, and accompanied it throughout the decades with its various incarnations and styles. It was inevitable that these two iconic art/entertainment forms, jazz and cinema, should meet, blend, cooperate, and have a reciprocal influence. While the early film music was mostly symphonic and inspired by the late-romantic XIX-century idiom, jazz and African-American music — in various form and with diverse and changing racial/social connotations — appeared onscreen even before the landmark film The Jazz Singer (1927), which officially launched the sound era.
This international conference aims at studying the longstanding relationship between jazz and cinema in its many facets and perspectives, and paper proposals are welcome from both film and music scholars. Some of the topics of investigation are the following (but are not limited to these):
The official languages of the conference are English and Italian. Papers selected at the conference will be published in a miscellaneous volume.
