The Centro Studi Opera omnia Luigi Boccherini – ETS was established in November 2005 to carry out the editorial work relating to the complete works of the lucchese composer Luigi Boccherini.

According to the D.P.R. 361/2000, the Centro Studi Opera omnia Luigi Boccherini ETS is registered in the Prefectural Register of Legal Persons established at the Prefecture of Lucca at number 457.

According to the art. 22 of the D.legs. 117/2017 and art. 17 and 24 of the DM 106 of 15/09/2020, the Centro Studi Opera omnia Luigi Boccherini is registered in the RUNTS as ETS (adoption number 5222 of 16/03/2026).

Since 2016 the Centro Studi has been awarded “Cultural Institute” by the Italian Ministry of Culture initially becoming eligible to the State’s annual ordinary grant (Law n. 534 – 17 October 1996, Art. 8), and then entering the specific three-year table (Law n. 534 – 17 October 1996, Art. 1) in 2024.

Institutional Purposes

According to Article 4 of the Statute and Article 4, paragraph 1 of the CTS (Codice del Terzo Settore), the association pursues civic, solidarity and social utility objectives on a non-profit basis. Its aim is to promote all types of research in the field of musicology and music history, paying particular attention to Luigi Boccherini, the society in which he operated, and the music of his time.

According to Article 5, paragraph 1 of the CTS, to pursue these objectives, the association primarily or exclusively carries out the following activities of general interest:

• education;
• the promotion of culture and art;
• the protection, promotion and enhancement of items of historical and artistic interest, including libraries and archival assets as referred to in Legislative Decree No. 490 of 29 October 1999;
• scholarly research of particular social interest;
• the organisation and management of cultural, artistic or recreational activities of social interest, including publishing activities, for the promotion and dissemination of culture, the practice of volunteering, and activities of general interest referred to in this article.

Publishing Activity

The Centro Studi hosts the Italian National Edition of the complete works of Luigi Boccherini, Muzio Clementi and Pietro Antonio Locatelli.

It publishes 13 international musicological series, 4 complete editions and 2 Journals.

Conference Activity

The Centro Studi also organizes international conferences and symposia on various musicological topics and over the course of 20 years of activity, it has provided no fewer than 80 international conferences with many of the institutions listed below.

The Library

Thanks to the acquisition of numerous sources and publications from almost twenty years of activity, the Centro Studi has decided to make its bibliographic heritage available and therefore opened a library in Lovere (BG) by the Iseo lake.

It consists of volumes of bibliographical and historiographical musicological and literary materials useful for research activities inherent in the fields of musicology.

It collects a library holdings of about 3500 volumes including books, journals, encyclopedias and repertories, musical sources and documents.

The Archive

Alongside the library, the Centro Studi has an historical archive. This can essentially be divided into a section related to musical sources between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and a more modern one relating to sources from the 20^th Century, with a large collection dedicated to Luigi Dallapiccola.

With regard to the first section, there are currently more than 400 sources. Many of the specimens can be found in very few international libraries and about 56 are unique sources belonging to the archive. Among the composers stand out names such as Luigi Boccherini, Giovanni Battista Viotti, Luigi Ferdinand of Prussia, Johann Baptist Cramer, Ferdinand Ries, Daniel Steibelt, Muzio Clementi, Ignace Pleyel, Giovanni Mane Giornovichi, Bonifazio Asioli and, in addition, one of the most substantial collection of sources of works by Jan Ladislav Dussek present in Italy can be found.

The historical archive also consists of a section that could be described as ‘modern’ and that is mainly related to documents, letters and works dating back to the musical world under the fascist regime. Of particular relevance is the Luigi Dallapiccola Collection.

Education

The Centro Studi also provides the organization of international music masterclasses and music abroad programmes with important universities throughout the worl.
